Fire Safety Tips for PMDs and PABs
In 2025, there were 49 fires involving Active Mobility Devices (AMDs), which include Power-Assisted Bicycles, Personal Mobility Devices and Personal Mobility Aids. Of these, 34 occurred at residential premises.
Fires involving AMDs can escalate very quickly due to thermal runway of the lithium-ion batteries. When this happens, the battery may explode and emit toxic gases, and the resulting fire could spread quickly. Knowing how to prevent AMD fires is important to keep our homes, workplaces and public areas safe.
Refer to the infographic below for tips on safe charging and use of AMDs.

What To Do in the Event of an AMD Fire
When an AMD catches fire at home, at the workplace or in a public area:
Evacuate from the unit immediately and close the door to limit the fire spread. If you are in an open area, stay away from the AMD on fire
Call 995 immediately for assistance
Do not attempt to fight the fire, as lithium-ion battery fires spread quickly and may explode
